I first came across Yoga in 1986, following my move from Germany to Britain. Subsequently, I experienced a variety of teachers from various backgrounds. In order to deepen my own practice, I completed the British Wheel of Yoga Foundation course in 2001 whilst working as an Occupational Therapist for the NHS. At the time, I had no intention to become a teacher.
However, when I was fortunate enough to meet Swami Pragyamurti from the Bihar/ Satyananda School of Yoga, I was inspired by the combination of Yoga and Mindfulness, and saw its potential in the management of Chronic Illness within my NHS work.
I also embraced the other classical strands of Yoga such as Mantra and Bhakti Yoga, and have made chanting and mantra part of my own practice.
Following in my teacher's footsteps, I spent time in the Ashrams Rikhiapeeth and Munger in India, and received initiation into Karma Sannyasin (Yogic Householder). I also received my spiritual name 'Suryananda' from Swami Niranjanananda, the spiritual head and successor of Swami Satyananda. Since then, I have received further training in Meditation , Chakra and Energy work, and completed the Kriyas Yoga course in 2019.
I have been teaching Mindfulness-based Yoga since 2004, including adults and young people with CFS/ME within the NHS.
In 2020, I decided to focus on private practice and teaching, and developed audio programmes to support my students throughout the COVID crisis.
